Like the inevitable character in a third of Hallmark Channel Christmas movies, I fear I have lost “The Christmas Spirit.” In hopes of finding it, I will be watching a ridiculous number of Christmas movies on TV. Here is my story…
I’ll Be Home for Christmas (2016) Hallmark Channel
-A Barbara Streisand soundtrack
-James Brolin & Mena Suvari
-A best friend who lists all of the good things in the main character’s life (so that the audience is all caught up), rather than doing any work whatsoever to show us any of those things.
-The world’s worst brochure for Mexico
-A dessert product called “Doe-Nuts” that I thought said “Deez-Nuts,” and I lost my shit.
-A boyfriend who says, “Why in the world would you go to a homeless shelter?” She literally just said she was volunteering there. Another Scrooge love interest…
This is almost a legitimately okay movie. It isn’t inundated with all of the usual tropes, so it’s definitely more original than most. However, it’s a little too serious to be all that enjoyable. Either be tongue-in-cheek, or do some more character development.
