Like the inevitable character in a third of Hallmark Channel Christmas movies, I fear I have lost “The Christmas Spirit.” In hopes of finding it, I will be watching a ridiculous number of Christmas movies on TV. Here is my story…
In the Good Ole Summertime (1949) TCM
-The assurance from the guy with the elbow pads before the movie that this WILL take place during Christmas at some point.
-A great opening montage of Chicago appreciation. I’ll never not love those.
-BUSTER KEATON! This makes me want to quit this sill Christmas challenge & resume my obsession with him instead.
-Judy Garland playing a sassy boss bitch. Shutting down condescending dudes at work since 1922. It’s truly a shame that dude will be her love interest…
-The origination of one of my favorite memes:
-A violin-crushing gag that was so funny I had to rewind it and watch it three times. (Honestly, I am so in love with Buster Keaton.)
Despite the age-old frustrating trope of the two main characters not liking each other (which is always the case because the man is an asshole), it really won me over. It was very cute, although lacking in Christmas relevance outside of the last 5 minutes.
